About

samantha eaton, certified health coach, charlotte, nc nutritionMy name is Samantha Eaton, and I’m so glad you’re here!

You know how most women always assume that when you get to that “perfect” weight, you’ll feel a whole lot happier, have more confidence, and actually enjoy catching a glimpse of yourself in the mirror?

I used to think that, too—until the number on the scale reached its lowest point…and so did I.

In my early college years, I regularly punished myself for what I told myself were extra pounds around my waistline and on my thighs. I had a “no pain, no gain” attitude about it, and took my type A, rule-following personality and followed as many weight loss rules as I could find. I mega-restricted calories and types of food (fat, carbs), popped diet pills like they were candy, and spent hours at the gym every day.

On occasion I found myself bingeing on chocolate chip cookies to make myself feel better…even if only for a moment, followed by massive guilt, and promises of getting back on track Monday.

When I finally hit my “Magic Number,” it was so strange…I felt like I could’ve cried. Because it didn’t feel like I had imagined it would at all.

I didn’t feel any happier, healthier, or more confident. Instead, I felt hopeless and frustrated. I felt deprived and overwhelmed about maintaining my new weight, and I STILL felt uncomfortable in my own skin.

It made no sense, I followed all the “rules”…what gives?? Why did I still feel so miserable?

That moment was what I refer to as my “diet rock bottom.” I knew I couldn’t maintain this smaller, Magic Number weight and still enjoy my life. Waking up every day fighting food and hating my body was an overwhelming and exhausting way to live. But I wasn’t sure what to do…dieting and restriction was all I knew!

Then, when I was 22, my dad was diagnosed with Parkinson’s, and my whole world got turned upside down. The doctors told us it was an incurable, degenerative disease, and we were all devastated. My mom and I set out to find ways to slow the progression as much as possible, and discovered studies which have shown a direct correlation between common food ingredients and chronic diseases like Parkinson’s.

Not only did we succeed in helping my dad, but it was just what I needed to take action with a new approach. I started by really questioning what I was doing to my body.

I learned how to turn my obsessive, type A, rule-following personality toward alignment with my body, which meant working with it, in a way that felt effortless.

I learned what we put in our bodies affects not only our current health and happiness, but sets the stage for our future wellbeing (and I plan to be a super-active, healthy and happy 100-year old).

I learned the damage I had been doing to my body and self-esteem by yo-yo dieting, restricting calories and food groups (like carbs), and over-exercising that I thought was just me being healthy, was actually setting me up for the opposite of what I wanted.

And I FINALLY learned (my AH-HA moment) that my negative body image was actually what had been making me miserable for years—not the number on the scale—and that I could look and feel better than I ever had…without pushing my body to the limit, or making myself miserable.

Before I knew it, I was effortlessly living my life—no longer obsessing about food, and naturally craving and eating what made me feel good most of the time, while feeling confident about myself and my body.
